Cartooning with Grades 3 & 4

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=coVsHXCsIdU Enjoy these jokes to give your funny bone a workout!

This week we are cartooning.  Cartoons are great because we don't have to worry if our faces/expressions look realistic in our drawing.  That can take away the stress we sometimes have when we are drawing.

Try different facial expressions and features:

Have some fun with talking and speech balloons.  Think like Elephant and Piggie books or Don't Let the Pigeon:

Tiny charms sculpting with Grades 5's and 6's Thursday and Friday

Today and tomorrow Grades 5 & 6 students will be sculpting tiny food charms with myself and Ms. Cassie Stephens.  You can use playdoh to practise these mini sculptures or like myself use salt dough (which is like homemade air dry clay).  Here is the video we will be using together if you want to get a head start.  She is using polymer clay (sculpty or fimo) but I don't have any of that on hand in my mini home art room LOL.

Sea Turtle sculpting

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oO4FD7SSP7Y&feature=emb_title

Ms. Stephens helps us out again today with sculpting sea turtles.  You can use homemade play doh or play doh at home instead of real clay for this activity.  Think about using spheres and coils to create other works of art such as ladybugs, spiders, flowers, and animals.  The flat sculpting techniques we are using this week are relief sculpture as they are flat not 3d and standing on their own.

Grade 2 Lesson for May 12.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w2l_cXyiLkg&t=777s

This is the lesson we were to do today with Ms. Cassie Stephens.  You can skip ahead to the 10:30 mark to get to the sculpture lesson.  The first 10 minutes are about making salt dough or homemade playdoh.  When you have created your bird, see what else you think you could make with your playdoh.  Some ideas from yesterday was a face, ladybug, butterfly, turtle.

Preparing for next week-May 11-15

Next week all Art Zoom classes will be working with sculpture techniques.  To be prepared for these explorations students should have access to some sort of modelling materials.  Playdoh works fine to explore but making your own air dry clay is simple and easy to do.
Here is a simple air dry clay recipe:
ingredients
  • 1 cup water
instructions
  1. In a large mixing bowl, stir together the flour and salt.
  1. Gradually add water while stirring and mixing to form a dough with a Play-Doh like consistency.
  1. Form the dough into a ball and knead for approximately 5 minutes, adding a bit more flour if the dough is too sticky or a bit more water if it’s too dry.
notes
I recommend covering your work/play area with an inexpensive plastic tablecloth to make cleanup easier!
How Long To Bake Salt Dough
If you want to bake your salt dough crafts, place them on a baking sheet in a 150-degree oven. Turn them frequently so that they dry out evenly. Baking time will vary depending on the size and thickness of your crafts, so just keep a close eye on them.
*Gluten-Free Salt Dough
If you or your child has a gluten sensitivity, substituting your favorite gluten-free flour one for one will work well in this recipe.
Here is also an easy playdoh recipe for the littles:
super simple non-cook play dough recipe. A fun kids activity they will love making and then playing with the play dough after. A really easy play dough recipe using items from your cupboard.

Spring/Mother's Day

Today I am posting many links for ideas for Mother's Day Art.  Some of these will be done as demonstrations in this week's classes but I thought I would post more in case students want a few different ideas.

Some of the best gifts for Mother’s Day are the special keepsakes that our kids make us. Our favorite keepsake crafts are handprint & footprint art, it’s so fun to see how much they grow from year to year. And our latest handprint art includes this super sweet cupcake card perfect for Mother’s Day or … #artsandcraftsgifts,
This painting could be done by cutting a toilet paper roll vertically, then re-rolling it so it has a pinwheel look.

Lastly for the older students, using the artist Georgia O'Keefe as inspiration, making large scale floral paintings to explore texture is a great spring art project.
